Good Morning, Meetpastordan Readers…this is in essence part 3 of blogs #282 and #284. In those two blogs I wrote about the state of our fallen culture. In conclusion, I stated that the only way to bring light into the prevailing darkness was through another Grace Awakening. Based on the responses I received, I have come to realize that the term “Grace” is not always received by the listener with clarity, and the term “Grace Awakening” provoked more questions. Obviously, my intent today is to bring clarity to this subject.
I begin by quoting Apostle Paul’s powerful words in 1 Corinthians: 18-21. “I know how foolish the message of the cross sounds to those who are on the road to destruction. But we who are being saved recognize this same message as the very power of God. As the Scriptures say: ‘I will destroy human wisdom and discard their most brilliant ideas.’ So where does that leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made them all look foolish, and has shown their wisdom to be useless nonsense. Since God in His wisdom saw to it that the world would never find Him through human wisdom, He has used our foolish preaching to save all who believe!”
For those who are not in Christ (meaning those who live for themselves, separated from God), the message of Christ’s death on the cross to pay the penalty for the sins of Mankind seems like utter nonsense. I know that because I was an atheist in the latter part of my previous life. And like other nonbelievers, that message made no logical sense. What intelligent man (like myself) could believe such a story? I was convinced it was made up by the church to give some semblance of hope to the flock. But thank God, today I realize I was ignorant of the truth.
As it says in the Scripture above, “God, in His wisdom, saw to it that the world would never find Him through human wisdom.” “And why is that”, you might ask? Because to grasp Spiritual concepts, it takes humility first, then an open mind and an open heart to process this new concept. That is just the opposite of the close-minded nonbeliever. However, when people reach a state of desperation and become aware of their own insufficiency, that is when they are most likely to open their minds and hearts to partake of the love and hope found in the Gospel of Grace.
Now I want to answer four frequently asked questions about the Gospel of Grace: 1. Why is this called the Gospel of Grace? 2. Why is Jesus so special? 3. Why did He come? 4. What does this mean to me?
- The term Gospel means “the teachings of Jesus” OR “the revelation of Jesus”, meaning you now realize and accept that He is who He claimed to be – the Son of God. The term Grace itself means unmerited favor. We did nothing to earn this favor, and we certainly did not deserve it. It’s a free gift! The Gospel of Grace means we realize that Jesus died in our place to pay the penalty for our sins, and we accept His sacrifice as a gift of love. The Book of Ephesians tells us that even before God created the world and Man (Mankind), His plan was always to send a Savior to do for us what He knew we could never do for ourselves. “Long ago, even before He created the world (and Man), God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes. His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and this gave Him great pleasure! (Ephesians 1:4-5)
- John 1:1 tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, the Word was God.” So, what does that mean? The Greek term for “Word” is “logos”, which means “Truth”, God’s Truth. When “Word” is capitalized, it is synonymous with “Jesus”. (Now read that Scripture and substitute Jesus for “Word”.) That is why John 1:14 tells us, “The Word became flesh (human) and dwelt among us. And we (the disciples) have seen His glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father.” When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist to start His ministry, a dove (the Holy Spirit) descended on Him and a voice from heaven proclaimed, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17) Jesus existed before the world was created. He gave up his Lordship to come to earth in the body of a man, thus demonstrating the truth of God’s Word by the way He lived His life.
- Jesus came because it was always God’s plan to send a Savior to do for us what He knew, even before He created us, that we could NOT do for ourselves. (Ref. to Scripture from Ephesians in #1 above.) From Creation until 2019 years ago (the coming of Jesus), man had the opportunity to make himself right with God by living according to His standard, the Ten Commandments. Romans 5:6 is our report card on that endeavor: “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time to die for us sinners.” “Utterly helpless” means that our self-attempt to please God was a miserable failure! And what was “just the right time”? It was when we showed ourselves to be utterly helpless to overcome the dilemma of sin through our own effort. This is when God implemented His plan: To send Jesus Christ as the sacrificial lamb to pay the penalty for our sins. Through His death on the cross, our sin ransom was paid in full, thus fulfilling the requirements of the Old Covenant. (blood being required for forgiveness of sin.) (Hebrews 9:22)
- So, what does this mean to me? (us) It means that now we have options. I’ll let Romans 6:23 present these options: “For the wages of Sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” When Jesus died on the cross to ransom us from sin’s penalty of death, this gave us two options. We can try our best to live a sin-free life, which for thousands of years proved to be an impossible task, or we can accept Jesus Christ’s payment on our behalf. If we choose the latter, we are accepting Him as our Lord and Savior, which means we are now in Christ. As such, our sins are forgiven, and we now have inherited eternal life. That seals our eternal destiny! We are no longer slaves to our sin-nature (human nature); now we can choose to make choices that bring honor and glory to God.
Sin is the dilemma that keeps Man separate from God. 1 Peter 1:16 tells us why that is a problem. God proclaimed, “You must be holy because I, the Lord, am holy.” In other words, if we are stained with sin, we cannot come into the presence of God. Therefore, we cannot join Him in Paradise for eternity because sin contaminates, kills, steals and destroys. Revelation 21:27 is the exclamation point concerning this matter: “Nothing evil, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry or dishonesty, will be allowed to enter.” (referring to Paradise) So here are our options: try our best to be sin-free, which is an impossible task, or accept God’s Gift of Grace with the many blessings that accompany that choice.
Forgiveness of our sins and eternal life are certainly reason enough to accept God’s Gift of Grace, but this is a gift that keeps on giving. We don’t have to wait until we die to begin experiencing more blessings. For those of us who will live for another ten, twenty, thirty or more years, we also inherit the indwelling Holy Spirit who empowers us to become the person God created us to be. We are no longer slaves to our human nature; through the Holy Spirit we can now rise above our circumstances to bring honor and glory to God. Through this newness of character comes a sense of confidence, security, strength, patience, peace, serenity, and joy. How’s that for hitting the spiritual jackpot?
Jesus died for the sins of the world. This new life is available to anyone who makes the decision to accept God’s Gift of Grace. (Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior) The choice is yours; reject God’s gift and remain in sin; accept His gift and experience eternal life, plus a transformed life right here and now. Now that you know the truth, isn’t this a no-brainer?
I will close with what is probably the most popular verse in the Bible, John 3:16. It encapsulates the essence of this entire presentation. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son. Whoever believes in Him will not perish, but will have eternal life.”
